Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) encourages the involvement of family and friends in caring for loved ones while they are hospitalized.

If you are here as a visitor, please help us maintain a respectful environment by:

• Being respectful of our patients by minimizing loud noises.
• Keeping the numbers of visitors in your family member's room to a reasonable number (we recommend 2 people at a time), especially if your loved one shares a room with another patient. Some areas of the hospital have specific visitor limitations for reasons of patient safety and comfort.
• Cooperating with health care staff if you are asked to reduce visitors or shorten visits. We are concerned with the recovery of your loved one and want to ensure your loved one gets enough rest.
• Limiting some visits from children. We recognize that a visit from a child family member can lift a patient's spirits. However, we are required to make sure children under 12 years of age have: Current immunizations (including chicken pox), are currently healthy (no colds or runny noses), have not recently been exposed to chicken pox.
• Staying calm and following the staff's directions in any type of emergency. We have defined procedures to follow to ensure everyone's safety.

Infection Control for Visitors

The following are some steps you can take when visiting a loved one to prevent the spread of infection:

• Wash your hands with soap and water or use the alcohol gel disinfectant provided in the patient's room before visiting.
• If the patient has a sign on the door, make sure you follow the indications as to whether entering the room requires gloves, gowns or mask. Your loved one may be at high risk for developing an infection or may have an infection that is easily transmitted. If you are unclear of the signage, contact the nursing-care provider.
• Do not bring food or drinks into the patient's room. This can easily attract bugs that can be a nuisance as well as harmful to the patient. There is a cafeteria and dedicated visitor lounge rooms available for use.
• The patients are more sensitive to developing disease in Critical Care Units, therefore flowers and potted plants are not allowed. A family member may be asked to take them home.
• Stay home if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms or if you are ill with any other contagious viruses. Infections can interfere in the patient's progress and lengthen the patient's stay in the hospital.
• Please let us know if we can be of assistance while you are visiting your loved one.
